You see it everyday, but do you know much about The Delta School’s mansion? There is more to it than you think. Originally, the mansion was home to the Wilson family, the founders of the Town of Wilson. We interviewed Mrs. Whitten and Mrs. Rorie for information because they spend much of the day in the mansion. When asked her favorite part of the day, Mrs. Whitten said it was seeing everyone who passed her desk and being able to chat with them. We were lucky to get a tour from Mrs. Rorie during the interview.
We asked both of them to tell us any interesting stories they knew which have happened in the mansion. We heard about one in which Mr. Robert Lee Wilson, once rode his horse in the mansion! The story goes that it was a bet between he and his wife. After he talked about how much he loved his horse, his wife exclaimed, “ I bet you don’t love your horse enough to ride it through the house!” He accepted the challenge, and came trotting in on his horse!
Another story was about how a construction worker’s finger was stuck somewhere in the walls. As the bricks were being laid inside, the unfortunate worker’s pinkie finger got stuck in the walls and it had to be cut off! It is said that the finger remains in the wall to this day.
Many of these stories came from people who revisited the mansion. Today these stories are stored in the memories of The Delta School faculty who work in the mansion. We are pleased to keep the stories that Mrs. Whitten and Mrs. Rorie shared with us going.
